Their should be more concern about chemicals in food packaging at schools.
Children Health
“The evidence is so overwhelming and the effects of manufactured chemicals are so disruptive for children, that inaction is no longer an option,” said Daniele Mandrioli
PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances)
PFAS are a class of over 15,000 man-made chemicals. Many have been shown to be hormone disrupting. PFAS have been put in fiber food packaging, like school lunch trays, to provide water resistant properties. This is not needed in the school meals.
Microplastics
Microplastics have been found in the human brains, blood, breast milk, bone marrow, and in every biome on Earth. It is also in the air we breath. Increased levels of microplastic is strongly correlated with heart disease, stroke and dementia. We should be making low plastic and plastic free meals to prevent exposure to micro plastics.
Black Plastic (Polystyrene #6)
Many black plastic food contact items (including single-use utensils) have been shown to have high level of lead and bromine. We believe this is due to electronic recycling materials in the feed stock for some polystyrene plastics. We believe this warrants a complete ban of black plastic in the K-12 school meals.
